You may not have known this because our Soul Seat logo is so prevalent, but our company for the last 10+ years has been named Health By Design. This was great on a local level, but now that our presence is expanding globally we no longer feel that this represents us, so you will be seeing a new name associated with the Soul Seat. Don't worry, we have not been acquired, and our values are not changing. We simply don’t want to risk infringing on other brands established with names similar to Health By Design or confuse our customers! We have put a lot of time and thought into the name Ikaria and we are very excited to share it with all of you!
Blue Zones are regions of the world where people live longer than average lives. Our founder, Pack, has always wanted to bring the qualities of Blue Zones into everyone’s lives to encourage healthy longevity. We feel that the name Ikaria Design Company truly speaks to the possibility of Blue Zone lifestyles anywhere in the world. Ikaria, Greece is considered one of these Blue Zones. A study on the island uncovered that nearly 1 out of every 3 people live to be in their 90s. Icarians have about a 20% lower rate of cancer, 50% lower rates of heart disease, and almost no dementia. They suffer a fraction of the diseases that commonly kill people in other parts of the developed world, and enjoy more years of good health. Our new name inspires and reminds us to do what we can to replicate Blue Zone living everywhere by adding movement where we can.
We were also very inspired by the legend of Icarus from Greek mythology. Icarus’ father was an inventor and a craftsman, responsible for creating the labyrinth that became their prison. Escaping a labyrinth requires a series of lateral moves in the face of fear and limitation. In designing the Soul Seat, we made moves against the myths and assumptions made by classical ergonomic design, and opened up more opportunities for our bodies' movement.
About the new logo:
In keeping with family tradition, we’re excited and proud to announce that our very own Nathan Halwel designed the logo in-house! He incorporated his own perspective to include elements representative of alignment, and used colors that we echo across our selection of products. Thanks, Nathan!
